Highland Photo Archive

The Highland Photographic Archive is part of Inverness Museum and Art Gallery within the Council’s Highland Museums. The photographic archive is responsible for preserving and cataloguing negatives and photographs from all over the highlands and to then make them accessible to all. Customer access to the archive is through Inverness Service Point on Church Street, where the archive’s office is based. If you wish to visit the office in person you must telephone first to arrange an appointment.

The archive is home to several major highland photographic collections:- The Joseph Cook which dates from 1880 to early 1900’s, the David Whyte collection which dates from 1880’s to 1970’s, the Jimmy Nairn collection which is from the 1950s, the Shennan collection and part of the MEM Donaldson collection. We also hold smaller photographic collections and donations from members of the public and local groups etc. The archive is now home to well over 100,000 negatives and prints which relate to most areas of the highlands but the majority are from Inverness and the surrounding area.
